In Vedic Astrology, there are many snapshot techniques available for judging the means of livelihood and the amount of money a person is going to earn and accumulate during his life time. Indu Lagna is one such tool provided by our Rishis. By analyzing the nature and characteristics of the lord of Indu Lagna sign, lord of Indu Lagna nakshatra, the signs and houses with which these two are associated determine the means through which the native is mainly going to earn money. The planets placed and aspecting the Indu Lagna nakshatra modify the effects. The strength of the planets involved will determine the amount of wealth.
In the following paragraphs, we would see by an example horoscope to compute the Indu Lagna and analyze its importance in finding out one's professional aspects and his/her wealth. While computing Indu Lagna, importance is given to the lords of 9th house, Dharma/ Bhagya bhava from the Lagna and the Moon. Each planet is assigned with no. of rays, as given below.
Sun - 30 rays, Moon - 16 rays, Mars - 6 rays, Mercury - 8 rays, Jupiter 10 rays, Venus - 12 rays and Saturn - 1 ray.
The rays of 9th lords from the Lagna and the Moon are first added and then divided by 12. The remainder obtained is considered as equivalent to that many number of signs and is added in the birth longitude of the Moon to get the Indu Lagna longitude.

Steps to compute Indu Lagna:
(1) Rays of 9th Lord from Lagna, Jupiter - 10
(2) Rays of 9th Lord from the Moon, Mars - 6
(3) Add (1) and (2), 6 + 10 = 16
(4) Divide the sum obtained in step (3), 16 by 12 to obtain remainder = 4
(5) Longitude of the Moon = 11R 15° 00′; 4 signs (obtained from step 4) from Pisces is Gemini.
(6) Indu Lagna = 2R15°00′ (Gemini - Lord Mercury), Ardra Nakshatra (extends from 06° 40′ to 20° 00′ of Gemini) - 3rd pada, Lord Rahu.
It may be observed that here, Indu Lagna falls in the 11th house of the chart and it lord Mercury is exalted in 3rd house, placed with Mars, the 5th and 10th lord. Indu Lagna nakshatra lord Rahu is placed in 5th house. Rahu represents software technology, internet and cloud computing and is the main planet responsible for career in IT. Mercury represents languages (including programming languages), shows skills of hands, communications, intelligence and curiosity to learn logic. Mars represents technology, engineering and when gets associated with Rahu and Mercury gives a career in software technology. The Moon representing one's mind is being aspected by all these three planets giving close inclination towards software technology as we know everything first starts from the mind only. Placement of Mercury and Mars in the sign of Mercury (Virgo) and Rahu in the sign of Mars (Scorpio) is another indication for him to choose this career. Again 3rd house shows one's initiatives and 5th house shows the inclination of one's mind took him to adopt software technology as his profession. Exalted Mercury and aspect of Lagna lord the Moon on it from 9th house show the magnitude of gains and achieving the highest positions in his profession.
